That is why we have developed this blog. When we were preparing to enter this highly competitive yet little understood business, we developed a complete case – composed of websites and blogs which would rank well on Google. By well, we mean on the first or second page of Google. When somebody is seriously searching for something on Google, they usually do not go beyond the first two pages. Google gives us only three lines: the header – so choose your website name and descriptor with care, the sub header which is your website address, and the two line descriptor called “rich snippet”. This is very crucial because you have to describe your business in two lines or 30 odd words. If you look above, I have described my business (it is not a real business, please note) as “Advertising college is a college for those who want to study Advertising, Public Relations & Event Management, on the weekends. Study while you work”. Now this is as precise as one can get. Attention grabbed. Query solved.
With our first website we have been able to rank on the first page for at least 10 different keywords – all this without paying a single penny to any SEO or any one else.
Next, with almost the same content (that’s the key) and the company logo, we created another site, a blog this time, called http://theadvertisingcollegeindia.blogspot.com. This was optimised for keywords like “Short term advertising college” & its derivatives. We wanted to see whether we could optimise a blog for another keyword.

Two of our blogs, or mini websites now rank on page four, for the same keyword. So we have three websites ranking in the first four pages, each with the same proposition or promise.
So how did we do it? How did we manage to rank on the first page of Google while millions of websites out there struggle? What did we manage to do what others could not? Or did not? It is more a question of “did not” than “could not”. Google plays by simple but fair rules. It demands that content be original, relevant and specific, and it rewards patience. But it demands you respect others and try and produce something better if you wish to get ahead. Yes, it is a big challenge to be listed on Google’s first page, especially for categories that see high traffic. And we are there to help you.
BONUS KEYWORDS
Further, as your website spends time on Google, you find it gets optimised for a lot of keywords that you did not plan for. That is always a good thing. Listing on Google is our ultimate aim. And if there are some keywords that come as bonus, they are worth their weight in gold. Here is an example. We made a blog called http://oyeithappensonlyinindia.blogspot.com. Sometime back we discovered that it ranks as the first site under “Fantastic Names India” key phrase.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO RANK ON GOOGLE?
Before we answer that question, why is it so important to rank on Google? There are two reasons. One reason has to be the sheer size of the e-commerce industry in India, which is now touching Rs. 60,000 crores. The second is the way the behaviour of consumers is changing. Today, a lot of consumers are logging on to the net to find out more or preview the product before they decide to buy it. The web & youtube are thriving with reviews, previews and advice. Even if consumers eventually buy offline, they are reading up a lot of information online. And almost of it begins where? You guessed it. Google. It is no surprise that last year (July 2011 to July 2012) Google India received 6 crore (yes!! 6 crore) unique visitors to its site with queries. This number would be bigger than the viewer base of many TV channels.
Now we come back to the question of how much time it takes to rank on Google. It really depends on how crowded the category is, but if your website has relevant content & optimised for the right keyword, your website can start appearing within 3 – 4 days on Google, on the initial pages, gradually moving up. Of course, this is possible only if the website is created in the right way.
FACEBOOK COMPANY PAGES SHOW UP IN GOOGLE SEARCH
Finally a word about Facebook. We have seen Facebook company pages doing well in Google Search. For example, our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/TheAdvertisingCollegeIndia sits on page two for keyword “Advertising College India”. Similarly, another of our Facebook pages http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-College-of-Advertising-PR-Event-Management/471799102859349 is also sitting on page one and two for “College Advertising PR Event Management” or its variants.
